AIMS

Overall aim

  • To enable all pupils to reach their mathematical potential.
  • To enable all staff to develop and maintain high standards of teaching.

In the light of this overall aim and the school's vision statement we have divided our aims as follows:

Personal
  • To develop pupils' confidence and effectiveness in mathematics.
  • To present mathematics as a satisfying and enjoyable experience.
  • To encourage pupils to be responsible for their own learning, both in and out of school.
  • To encourage the use of mathematics post 16.
Social
  • To provide opportunities for discussion of mathematical ideas as individuals, groups and classes.
Academic
  • To develop knowledge, skills and understanding as set down in the National Curriculum and GCSE syllabi.
  • To develop mathematics as an essential method of communication.
  • In a wide variety of problems develop an understanding and appreciation of the use of mathematics in everyday situations.
  • To develop mathematics as a tool in other subject areas.

 

 
 

OBJECTIVES

  • To achieve our aims we will pursue the following objectives as a department:
  • improve our results for: GCSE both A*-C and A-G and in KS3. See development plan for more specific detail.
  • develop pupils' confidence and effectiveness in mathematics.
  • provide differentiated courses appropriate to the needs of our pupils.
  • provide positive role models through our behaviour and teaching to help raise pupils’ expectations.
  • increasingly bring the outside world into the classroom and vice-versa.
  • give advice on mathematics and numeracy post 16.
  • provide access to, and teach the use of, a wide variety of mathematical equipment including IT, calculators, mathematical instruments, etc.

To achieve our aims pupils should be able to:

  • recall and apply mathematics across the curriculum.
  • work in a variety of groupings both independently and cooperatively.
  • communicate mathematically in words, numbers, diagrams, through IT, etc.
  • use equipment efficiently in appropriate situations.
  • move between sets where appropriate.

To achieve our aims staff should be given the opportunity to:

  • teach across a wide age and ability range.
  • call upon departmental support and encouragement.
  • access relevant INSET opportunities.
  • develop professionally with a view to future promotion.
